Enhanced CD's

The phrase "Enhanced CD" is used to describe a CD that contains multimedia CD-ROM data for playback on personal computers as well as "Red Book" CD Audio (the kind that plays in domestic CD players). Nearly all commercial enhanced CDs include an interface application to help users to navigate the added content, and to extend the brand identity of the release on to the users computer. Why should I add Enhanced CD content to my CD?

An enhanced CD is an opportunity to make your release a cut above the rest. Quality enhanced CD content, such as video can make the difference between someone buying your disc, and someone just downloading the tracks off the Internet.

Internet Links included in your enhanced CD application to artist back catalogue and online merchandising, can make sure that you maximize your potential income from each disk sold.

Enhanced CD content on your demo could spark enough interest at the record company to get your disc special attention, especially if it's better than what they get produced for their own artists (eg: More than just a free screensaver.). Then, when your disk is in the drive, you can let your music do the talking, backed by an interactive multimedia presentation in your own style. Full band biography information and contact details can also be included, so your demo and your phone number don't get separated.

Can Enhanced CDs be Played on normal hi-fis?

In the past many enhanced CDs used the "Mixed Mode" standard, where the multimedia CD-ROM data would reside in track 1 of the disc, meaning that if the enhanced CD was played on a domestic CD player, playing track 1 would result in silence, or a blast of white noise.

Modern CD duplication houses use the "Blue Book" or "CD plus" standard for duplication runs of enhanced cds, under the "Blue Book" standard the CD-ROM content is put on the disc after the audio in a seperate session and is therefore never encountered when played on a domestic Hi-Fi.

The "Blue Book" standard is supported by (among others) Apple Macintosh, Sony, Philips and Microsoft.
